Brace & Browns

Brace & Browns is a slightly upmarket restaurant come lounge bar on Whiteladies Road. Recently renovated they have made a lot of effort to establish themselves as a foody joint, serving a good selection of Tapas and other foods along with a range of wine and beers

The building itself is nicely renovated with good seating inside and a decked seating area outside. Beware though as this can be pretty perilous in the wet.

The food is well presented with well cooked meat and a selection of veg and bits served as a range of side dishes. I think I may have hit on a bad day as my roast potatoes were overcooked nigh on impossible to cut up (good job I have well seasoned teeth) and on inspecting my neighbours, most had also left their potatoes. The monster Yorkshire pudding was a bit burnt towards the top but only just. Considering we were almost the first tables to get served at the beginning of a Sunday shift, this is a poor showing in my books, especially considering the price.

That said the meat was very tasty and the overall presentation and portion size was good. I like the fact that the veg was served in bowls to the side and included cauliflower cheese (some people don’t like this dolloped all over their meal) however I felt that they should have also served the gravy in a jug. The gravy was lovely but there was a lot of it, which isn’t always to peoples liking.

The service was friendly and efficient and the ambience is relaxed and comfortable. Overall not too bad but for £14 I expect to be amazed.

The ambience in this place is much better than it used to be years ago when it was Deason’s, which was overpriced and served underwhelming food in a slightly hostile environment.

Brace and Browns is now a pleasant, welcoming place with friendly serving staff, an excellent choice of wine, beer, and also non-alcoholic beer (vital for up the duff women like me).

The roast itself is very well presented and generous in terms of portioning, and doesn’t take an overly long time to arrive. Criticisms would be slightly undercooked veg, although the cauliflower cheese was excellent. Tons of gravy so you might want to specify if you want it on the side.

The meat was very good, tender, fresh and lots of it.

You need to book- this place gets busy on a Sunday.
