Halo

Halo is set in a prime location on Gloucester Road. More of a bar / brassiere than a pub or restaurant it has a lovely street side frontage and a good sized function rooms and garden area. The location is great and the dining area, although a little cramped, offers a fantastic vantage point for watching the hustle and bustle of Gloucester Road.

I have a bit of a love hate relationship with Halo. It was one of the first places I ate out in Bristol, all those years ago, and I had an amazing meal there. Since then it has changed hands many times and the inconsistency in the quality of food is the most memorable bit about it. This is a shame as it really has the potential. I am happy to be corrected about this and I keep returning on the off chance that I was unlucky last time and it must have got better, but to date I have not had a good meal there since.

Last time I went (late in 2012) I was told that the roast was good and had improved a lot, enough of a reason to give it another chance in my books, however I was sadly disappointed. The portion size was good and there was fresh veg and all of that, but I was very upset to be served what looked like reconstituted chicken and an Aunt Bessie’s frozen Yorkshire pudding. This is a cardinal sin in my books. If you’re going to sell a roast then at least bother to cook a real piece of meat.

I’m aware that I am being pretty critical here (which is rare) but this really was a disappointing experience. To give Halo the credit that its due, the food was edible if a little fake tasting, the veg was cooked and not everyone was as scathing of their meals as I was.

The staff were very friendly and gave great service which helped soften the blow, but if you’re looking for a tasty roast, I’d reccomend you go elsewhere.

Feel free to tell me if I have miss-judged Halo or if you have been there since and it has improved as this is a great location in the middle of a lot of other pubs that get busy very quickly.
