The Pump House

The Pump House is an imposing old Victorian water pumping station, situated on the edge of Bristols floating harbour, by the Junction Lock in Hotwells. With a gastronomic treat of a menu this is a more ‘classy’ location for a Sunday roast and the clientele and atmosphere reflect this.

Sympathetically converted this is an impressive pub with an airy atmosphere downstairs and a chic more intimate restaurant on the upper level. The open plan layout of this high ceilinged building allows for the atmosphere of the pub below to waft up onto the mezzanine, complimenting without disturbing the more formal feeling of this dining area.

The pub is pretty spacious and has both formal seating (with linen) and less formal seating areas depending on your preferences. Due to its popularity the pub gets very busy around Sunday lunch time so I would recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment.

The food itself is pretty spectacular. Lots of locally sourced produce is prepared onsite to make a very tempting menu and the presentation is as good as nouveau cuisine without the silly portion sizes. You know you are in for a treat when the menu meticulously lists the home town, diet and genealogy of each meat, and the chefs do it justice.

This luxury is also reflected in the price, but I am pleased to say that they do not scrimp on portion size. There is nothing worse than paying loads for a roast and leaving hungry. My only criticism would be the roast potatoes. Perhaps I was there on a bad day but they were definitely overcooked. They lacked substance inside and were chewy on the outside, it is a good job that we had a substantial slab of amazing beef to fill us up instead.

Overall the experience of eating at The Pump House was lovely. The staff were attentive, even if a little taken aback when I was critical of the potatoes. They did ask if everything was OK so in my opinion they should expect honest feedback.

This is definitely up there as one of the better roasts in Bristol.
