The Cadbury

The Cadbury House Pub is hidden away in the back streets of Montpelier, but its reputation extends far beyond the local community. Well known for its relaxing atmosphere and regular DJ sessions this is a very popular locals drinkery.

The building is rumoured to have been about since the time of the Tudors and the area certainly has some unusual architecture to support this theory. The pub retains a lot of the charm of an old establishment with an open fire, low doorways and exposed beams and brickwork, however the half timbered look on the exterior is a clever trompe l’oeil.

Inside the pub has a range of seating with benches and stools plus there is an decent sized garden to the rear. In the summer this is a very popular ‘recovery green’ so you’ll have to get in early if you want to get a space on the lawn.

The kitchen has recently undergone a change of hands and the food has improved considerably. The roasts on offer are the normal choice of beef, chicken, pork or nut roast and all come with spuds, veg and a Yorkie. I have to say how pleased I was with how the food has improved, having eaten here many times in the past and generally not being bowled over by the standard of fair, I was pleasantly surprised to be served with a well cooked slab of pork with home made apple sauce and some very well cooked veg.

Being critical I’d say that the crackling was over done, described as a heated up pork scratching by someone, it was dry crunchy and slightly burnt. The Yorkshire pudding was a tad disappointing as well as it was small and pretty flabby, but all in the meal was very tasty so I forgave these small slips.

For the price the roast here is a good deal and it is well cooked. If you are looking to sample the delights of Montpelier’s ‘boho’ culture and relax in a very informal pub, then I would recomend you try out The Cadbury.

been twice now so i defiantly enjoy the food the service is really good, and lovely friendly place all in all, however in the winter can be hard to get a seat inside. the price of the roast is very fair however if you want all the veg it costs extra I’ve had the belly of pork which is cooked well but the veg is the real star of the show. only real criticism no gravy boat (and the extra side costs)
