The Prince of Wales

The Prince of Wales is one of the more popular pubs on Gloucester Road. Found at the junction of Zetland Road, Cranbrook Road and Gloucester Road this pub sits at the heart of Bishopston and in the middle of a very busy area of Bristol.

The pub typifies Bristol culture in many ways with the clientèle, a mix of students, hipsters and Bristols socialites, all rubbing shoulders in a happy and vibrant bar.

Inside the pub is focused around the bar with slightly cramped seating on all 3 sides. There is plenty of room really but as the pub is so popular, sometimes you’ll struggle to get a seat. Outside and to the rear of the pub there is a covered and gas lamp heated patio / smoking area, which has further bench style seating.

The roast is nothing too spectacular, however it is a good feed and of a consistently fair quality. When I last went we had a belly pork roast and chicken, both of which were served quickly and both of which were a decent portion size.

I was a bit disappointed with the crackling (or lack of) on the pork. There was a slightly burnt bit of fat that was crunchy in places but it needed a bit more loving really and the roast potatoes were a tad under done. That said it was all scoffed up and we were pretty full and satisfied at the end of it.

The POW makes the effort to provide a better than normal pub roast and they try and accommodate the requirements of the locals by where possible using free range and organic produce. All the meat comes from Murray’s the butcher just up the road and the veg is locally sourced as well.

However, I think that with a little extra effort that this pub could do a whole lot better. Its in a prime location and with a captive and loyal audience so why not go that extra mile and server a really amazing roast?

Usually a good roast, decent value with a good pub atmosphere.
