The Star & Dove has a good reputation and was most definitely on the list as a roast to sample, if only I could call in time to book a table on a Sunday. Finally (booking 5 days in advance) I made it along this weekend and I have to say that it was well worth the wait, and I can’t believe I haven’t eaten here before.

Apparently owned and run the by 3 head chefs, the Star epitomises what I regard as a great pub. It’s well presented, stylish and clean whilst maintaining some of the charm of an olde-worlde pub. Its a locals boozer combined with gastro pub. I’ve had the odd cider in here before and been seduced by the scotch eggs on the bar (they are amazing if a little pricey in comparison to a pack of peanuts) however I’ve not managed to make it for a roast until today.

The bar is spacious. Downstairs is split into 3 defined areas and there is further seating upstairs, though this is apparently only used during the week for more formal dining. There is plenty of room for 100 or more hungry Roast Reviewers plus there is a patio garden area to the rear with more seating. Kids are welcomed and they provide high chairs and good baby changing facilities, though there was no obvious children’s menu, despite this being a pub in a very residential and family oriented area.

The food was spectacular. You can tell from the menu that they treat their grub with respect and a dollop of humour. ‘Rump of Cow and Pungent Cream’ could have been ‘beef with home-made horseradish’, but this isn’t just a normal roast. The beef was served in 2 thick red and tasty slices, accompanied with spuds, celeriac and bread sauce and of course a lovely crispy Yorkshire pudding. Additional veg was served on the side plus we ordered a few of the extra side dishes which were equally tasty.

If I was to be critical, and I am trying hard to find something to fault them for, then it would be that each roast was only served with one half roast potato and that the additional side dishes of veg could have been more generous, considering they are £3 each. That said I was stuffed at the end of the meal and couldn’t have eaten another spud anyway, or maybe I could have used it to mop up the remaining gravy that we had in a very generous boat on the side.

I have had to re-evaluate my top secret scoring criteria because of this experience, however suffice to say that I left extremely satisfied.

Satisfied not only by the meal but by the entire experience. The service was to be commended as well. We were well catered for without being hassled. The man who served us gave us the attention we needed, delivered drinks to our table, knew the wine menu and was a very pleasant chap who also left us alone to enjoy our meal and each others company.

I have to commend the The Star & Dove for exceeding my expectations. I have moaned a few times about paying above the average price for a roast and not getting what I feel is a good deal. The Star is slightly more expensive than the average at £13 per roast, however it is worth every penny and way exceeds the majority of the Sunday roasts on offer in Bristol.

The only let down (apart from the cost). Is that the veggie roast doesn’t come with gravy, the nut roast was huge and a bit dry. I couldn’t finish it unless I had a pint of water to wash it down. Overall, quality of food is very high. Definitely recommended for the carnivores. Might need to re-think the veggie option.

Sunday Roast at the S&D is a taste experience. Good ingredients, cooked well, but in small’ish amounts and IMO quite expensive. This is the only reason we’ve not rushed back.
