The White Bear

The White Bear is situated on top of St Michaels Hill, sandwiched between Cotham, Kingsdown and Clifton. Its proximity to the university makes it a very popular pub with the students and its residential location lends itself a great venue for Sunday Lunch.

This is a classic pub with a 250 year history. It has quirky features like a theatre upstairs (The Wardrobe Theatre) and has a regular calendar of music, comedy plus the occasional random event like a Chilly Eating Competition.

The pub is spacious enough to offer private hire areas for parties and has a small courtyard garden. Not too long ago the pub underwent a refit making it a comfortable and modern venue. They also offer free WiFi so you can review your roast as you’re digesting.

To the food – they have a good menu other than roasts and offer a range of vegetarian options including a Nut Loaf  (£9). The roast itself is a generous portion and pretty good in the grand scheme of things. Unusually they offer roast lamb as well as beef, chicken and pork and all come with a good selection of fresh veg.

I found the beef a bit stringy but I could have just been unlucky on this occasion and they had run out of Yorkies when I was being served which was definitely a black mark, however to give them credit one was delivered half way through my meal which helped to mop up the gravy.

Overall I find this pub to have a relaxing atmosphere and they serve a decent range of drinks and food and the staff are friendly.

We enjoyed our Sunday roast. I opted for the pork and was happy with the quality of meat. Service wasn’t brilliant however they were busy. I would recommend and go again.

A good range of locally sourced meats, well cooked and presented, for not too much smash. Not overly greasy or fatty, with generous but not overwhelming portion sizes. Don ’t fear being surrounded by students- the atmosphere is much more cosmopolitan these days. The only slight criticism is levelled at the slightly surly staff serving at the bar during my visit, but this is only a tiny gripe. On the whole a nice Sunday experience.
